Artists Welcome to Plein Art Paint-Out

The Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore’s plein air paint-out takes place Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nicholas Canyon Beach, 33850 Pacific Coast Highway, in Malibu.

These free events welcome artists and art enthusiasts of any skill level and provide a great way to meet other artists and discover new sites for inspiration. Bring art supplies, water, lunch, sunscreen and repellent, hat and walking shoes. The event begins with a short painting demonstration, and an optional friendly critique is at noon.

Prepare to Be Mystified

“Vitaly: An Evening of Wonders,” on Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Pepperdine University’s Smothers Theatre, features Vitaly Beckman, who has mystified fans around the world with his signature illusions, including Las Vegas superstars Penn & Teller, whom he successfully fooled in their hit TV show, “Fool Us.” Hailed as “one of the most captivating and enjoyable illusionists performing in the world today” (Chilliwack Progress), Vitaly’s illusions leave even the most jaded audience awestruck. From disappearing faces on drivers’ licenses to paintbrushes that paint on their own, Vitaly blends art and illusion with his captivating style, creating a unique theatrical experience that retraces his journey from a boy with a dream to a man with a vision. While taking this journey, the audience rediscovers along with Vitaly the importance of finding beauty and wonder in everyday life and in all living things. Building Fire Resilient Homes and Communities: Innovations and Lessons from Australia on Tuesday, April 9, is the first in a series of Resilient Malibu Workshops, presented by the City of Malibu and Tree People. The presentation is geared for residents who want to learn about the most innovative Best Practices aimed to increase fire-resilience for homes in high fire-risk areas. An Australian Emergency Management expert will share constructive lessons learned from the “Black Saturday Bushfires” of 2009 and discuss practical and applicable modifications in building design and materials to increase fire safety and resiliency for residents who are embarking on the post-fire rebuilding process.
