Don’t be fooled by the name—Juicy Ladies—into thinking the Palisades’ newest culinary addition is simply a juice bar. Actually an inviting organic cafe with a full menu of delicious, healthy dishes available throughout the day, Juicy Ladies also serves up an extensive menu of smoothies, “shots,” coffee, tea and juices, ranging from orange and carrot to combinations known to cleanse and detox the body.
Owners Magal Nagar and Kinzie Oppenheim opened their second location in the Palisades in July, fueled by their passion for creating and serving organic food and drinks that can improve the health of their customers while helping them to detoxify. The dedicated duo aims to educate diners about nutrition’s effect on physical and emotional health and the definitive connections between the body, mind and spirit.
“We want to create an awareness in the community that organic and healthy food can also be very tasty and affordable,” says Nagar. “We do a lot of research and are very picky about ingredients. We don’t serve anything to our customers that we wouldn’t eat or that we don’t believe in.”
The co-owners met through mutual friends in Woodland Hills, where they opened their first location in July 2009, after noticing a lack of healthy food and juice options available in the area. Nagar, a medical intuitive and channeler, and Oppenheim, a certified nutritionist, offered their soups, juices, salads and sandwiches at Farmer’s Markets in the Palisades, Brentwood, Santa Monica and Malibu before opening another Juicy Ladies café on the corner of Castellamarre and Sunset, one block from Pacific Coast Highway.
“We received such a positive response from customers at all of the Farmer’s Markets, but we felt a special reception from the residents of the Palisades,” says Oppenheim. “Many people asked us to open our next location here, and we already felt like we had been embraced by the community.”
In addition to organic and non-GMO ingredients, grass-fed eggs (fried in coconut oil), milk, butter and cheeses; oat and hemp milk; raw almond butter, honey and dates; sprouted breads and tofu; and non-acidic coffee grace the menu. Menu items, including their hummus, falafel, tahini, hot sauce and dressings, are made from scratch and sourced locally. Organic greens, parsley, cilantro, kale, dandelions, celery and bell peppers come from John Givens Farms and organic apples, oranges, lemons and seasonal fruit hail from Nicholas Family Farms.
Breakfast favorites include the Avocado Egg Sandwich, Eggs Benedict, Super Food Crepes and the gluten-free Classic Waffle. Lunch and dinner standouts include sandwiches and wraps (Falafel, Hummus, Avocado, and Sprouts, Vegan Bacon Avocado, Tofu Scramble Burrito), Juicy Bowls (Healthy Belly, Vegetable Curry, Portobello), Burgers (Garbanzo, Juicy Special, Quinoa Veggie, Spicy Spinach) and Avocado Toast (B/L/D).
But Wait…There’s More!
The sublime fresh juice selection includes apple, cucumber, orange, grapefruit, celery and carrot, with add-ins like ginger, beets, kale, parsley, garlic, cilantro, cabbage and mint. Juice blends address various issues, from hydration and kidney, liver, blood, lymphatic and immune function to alkaline levels and overall health. Try the Strawberry Banana, Chocolate Almond, Peanut Butter or Kale Protein and Royal Green smoothies, or a “shot” of Ginger, Wheatgrass, Apple Cider Vinegar or Turmeric.
Organic and gluten-free desserts include muffins, cupcakes, doughnuts, banana bread, cookies and fruit bars, and chocolate coconut spheres.
Complementing the exceptional fare, the cafe and porch offer a warm and welcoming gathering place, thanks to interior designer Mathilda Rosenberg’s talent and sense of whimsy. The light-filled eatery sports a vaulted ceiling, inventive lighting, floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden floors, a community table and modern, comfy furniture, complete with a hanging chair. Every seat offers a lovely view of the Pacific Ocean and the porch features a firepit and an innovative growing wall. Even the restrooms are creatively designed and highlighted with illustrations by Nagar’s extremely talented daughter Arbel Nagar.
